How Dams Can Become Contaminated After Heavy Rainfall

Thunderstorms and rain are an inevitable part of nature but they can be a real issue for those who own dams. This is because heavy rain can produce flooding that washes organic matter across the landscape and into your dam.

Issues Caused By Contaminated Dams

When floodwaters cause organic materials such as plants, manure and straw to wash into your dam multiple problems can occur. The water starts to become contaminated and undrinkable for livestock. Although healthy livestock may seem unaffected for a time, young and sickly livestock will become affected rapidly.

The organic materials that have washed into your dam will also start to produce blue green algae, which is toxic to both people and animals. It is best to remove livestock for the dam straight away and quarantine it until the algae has been removed completely.

Treating A Contaminated Dam

There are a few ways that you can treat a contaminated dam, the first being to remove all the organic materials from the dam. This can be done with our excavator and bobcat hire. The excavator is great for removing debris from the centre of the dam while our bobcat hire options can clear the banks.

You should also aerate your dam and improve its water quality through chemical treatments such as chlorination. If you have blue green algae then you will need to add barley straw to your dam, as this will strip the nutrients from the water that allows the algae to grow. It also produces chemicals as it breaks down that limit algae growth.

Maintaining Your Dam After Heavy Rainfall

The best way to maintain your dam after heavy rainfall is through excavators and bobcat hire. This will allow you to remove the debris from your dam faster so your water has less chance of becoming contaminated.

Our excavator and bobcat options are also great for desilting dams and help reduce the salinity in the water. This is another form of water contamination that can be caused by excess salt being washed into your dam making it undrinkable.

Dust around constructions sites is a common occurrence, which can affect the health of your workers in the long term. Different types of dust will have different effects but you should ensure that any dust on the worksite is mitigated using Brisbane water truck hire.

Types Of Dust

Types of dust that are commonly found on a construction site include silica, metal dust, asbestos and wood dust. Metal and wood dust is created from their respective materials. Silica dust, on the other hand, comes from a range of materials including bricks, cement, drywall, stone and grout. This is usually spread when these materials are cut, ground or drilled into.

Asbestos is one of the better known materials that is dangerous when it becomes dust. It can be found in buildings that are older than 40 years and should be handled by professionals with the right qualifications.

The Dangers

There are many dangers that surround dust that can affect both people and machinery. It can interfere with the operation of machinery if it gets into key working parts. Dust can also create slip hazards, in severe cases can cause blindness and if inhaled can badly damage the lungs.

The biggest danger dust possesses is when it is breathed in for extended periods of time. This can cause a multitude of health problems including breathing difficulties, respiratory diseases and cancer.

How To Mitigate Dust

There are a few ways that you can mitigate dust. The first is providing the correct protective gear for your workers, especially if they are working with materials that easily creates dust.

To reduce the spread of this dust on the worksite it is best to wet the whole area using our Brisbane water truck hire. This will reduce the risk of other workers on the site inhaling and having issues caused by dust.

Whether you are looking at building a small driveway in front of your house or a large driveway through acreage there is no doubt that it is easier with Brisbane plant machinery hire. Here is what you need to know about building your new driveway.

The plant hire machinery

When building a driveway we recommend using our Brisbane combo hire machinery. These combo hires include an excavator, bobcat and tipper truck. This will ensure your project has plant machinery to dig and level the soil as well as taking the excess material away. You can also bring materials to your property with our tipper trucks.

Hiring plant equipment for your project will save you time and money when building your driveway. You can’t rush the drying process of concrete so the sooner you have it installed and ready for curing the sooner your driveway will be complete.

Australian regulations

When building your driveway there are a few regulations you need to abide by. The first is removing the footpath that crosses over your driveway on council land. You must have an uninterrupted path for your driveway so using an excavator to remove the council path is a great way to save time.

Also be aware of your boundaries and your property’s guidelines so you don’t accidentally build your driveway in the wrong spot. A driveway in Australia must be a minimum of 2.5 metres wide but 3 metres is usually the standard for a single car driveway and is the maximum width allowed for properties 450sqm or smaller.

Timeframe

Building a driveway on your own can be time consuming. However, we can make the process quicker with our Brisbane plant machinery hire. With professional operators to help you out your driveway will be built sooner than you think.

The Benefits Of Building A Dam

There are many reasons that people might want to build a dam on their property. You may want to build a dam for irrigation, for your livestock, as a way to mitigate flooding on your property or even for landscaping to improve the look of your property. In any case, building a dam is not a task that can be done by hand as it is a large scale project more suited for plant equipment.

Dams are a great way to store water on your property so that you don’t have to always rely on Government resources for water. This is especially beneficial for farmers as it is cheaper to save rain water than to ship it in for crops or livestock. This can save farmers a lot of money during seasons where it is especially dry.

Building a dam on your property with Brisbane plant hire machinery can be great if you live in a flood zone too, as the dam will collect the flood water instead of it covering your property which, in some cases, can limit access to and from your home. Floodwaters can also damage the plants or grass that your livestock eat, especially if there is high salinity in the water. In this case, it can be essential that a dam be built on your property.

Aussie Excavators provide Brisbane plant hire machinery to help you build dams on your property. This allows you to save time and money building the dam yourself as our experienced operators can make quick work of the job. This means that you will be able to benefit from your new dam sooner.

When building a dam we suggest hiring an excavator, as they are very versatile machines that can dig your dam efficiently and safely. If you need the earth that is dug up moved off your property then our truck hire services are a great option as well. Why Is Desilting A Dam Important?

Owning a dam can present some challenges and one of them is silt. Silt is a fine, sandy soil, clay or other material that builds up or is deposited in a dam, which builds up the sediment within the water. This can make your dam look muddy and may possibly make it undrinkable for livestock. Silt can also be a problem for pipes and pumps that might be pulling water from your dam.

Desilting your dam is important as silt can increase the risk of evaporation, algae blooming in your water supply and reduces the amount of water your dam can hold. This can be especially concerning during drought periods and for farmers. Silt can also affect the structure of your dam and, if not dealt with, can cause further problems for your dam.

Clearing the silt from your dam is a great way to reduce sediment and remove the nutrients that algae needs to grow. This will protect your water supply from becoming contaminated and reduces evaporation while increasing water volume in your dam. Clearing silt from your dam when it is dry is one of the easier ways to keep your dam clean. You can also maintain other areas of your dam as well while it is dry.

Dozer hire Brisbane and excavator hire are excellent for desilting dams as they are made to move earth and sediment easily. As dams can be quite large it is better to hire plant machinery to remove the silt in your dam than doing it by hand. Our team of operators are professionals in handling plant machinery so your dam will be cleared while protecting other vital components such as the pumps and pipes.

When desilting your dam it is best that the silt is removed from the area. Our plant hire team will make sure this is done so that the silt doesn’t run back into your dam and repeat the process over again. If you have silt with high levels of salt content which has increased your dam’s salinity we suggest seeking professional help to reduce the salinity levels. However, we will ensure that the removed silt is dealt with properly so that it doesn’t affect the surrounding landscape. This can be done by taking the silt away with our truck hire options.

If your dam is in need of desilting there are currently Government rebates if your dam is primarily used for livestock. This is the perfect opportunity to desilt your dam and save. Contact us today for our excavator hire or dozer hire Brisbane options on (07) 3206 2800
